TROPICAL WORLD - NORTHERN MONK
Described as a ‘Tropical Smoothie IPA’ on the can from Northern Monk and that’s a bang on description. On opening, the beer had a sweet and fruity aroma (grapefruit) and once in the glass had an opaque deep vibrant yellow/orange appearance with a strong white head. It even looked a fruity smoothie. On tasting, the beer was a rollercoaster of tropical flavours that kept going and going; A combination of pineapple, mango, lemon and orange right to the end. When I expected a bitterness at the end the tropical flavours continued with only the slightest of bitterness under further flavour. Carbonation appeared high but tasted light and complemented the medium body. This pint certainly packed with zest and took me to a tropical world onboard a rollercoaster of fruity flavours. I have had some very good fruity beers of late that have used blends of Simcoe, Azzaca, Citra BBC, Mandarina to name but a few but this beer used a different methodology and added pineapple and Mango concentrates. Regardless of your preference, it is worth a go if you enjoy fruity beer but be ready for a huge sweet tropical hit. A full on 6.2% Tropical Smoothie IPA!
